Verifying PAN card by Name of a person

This article is about how to verify a PAN number, whether it belongs to a person whom you believe it should. If you’d rather want know your application status, please visit PAN card application status page.

Search PAN by name

Sometimes when someone’s name is too long, there is a provision while applying for a PAN to give a Name that you’d like to have printed on the card. Most people who have long names would utilize this feature. But, when it comes to any financial matter, like opening a Demat account or filing your income tax, it appears to your tax consultant as if your name is printed wrongly and tell you that you’d need to change your name on the PAN card.

This can also be a problem if you use Xerox copy of your PAN card that contains a short desired name for any Identification purposes.

In such cases, it is highly advised to have a copy of the record of your PAN card as seen in the Income Tax office Data base.

For this, please visit http://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/portal/knowpan.do

In the fields provided, you can escape the first and Middle name and give your Surname (last name or Family name) and your date of birth. Type in the Security code and submit.

You’d then get your PAN number including your complete name (as you gave during your application), Date of birth and your jurisdiction as per the Income tax office records.

Take a print out of this page for future reference. If in case any one similarly feels that there is something wrong with your PAN, show them this copy.

Employers can also use this method to verify the PAN numbers of their employees.
