The world's longest cross-sea bridge -- the 36.48-km eight-lane Qingdao Jiaozhou Bay Bridge in China -- opened for traffic on Thursday. The opening ceremony of the cross-sea bridge, spanning Jiaozhou bay of Qingdao city in Shandong province, was held on Thursday morning, according to reports. The bridge, connecting the urban district of the city to its Huangdao district, cost 14.8 billion yuan ($2.3 billion). Construction of the bridge began in May 2007. The bridge will shorten the distance between the two places by 30 km, cutting travel time down from over 40 minutes to around 20 minutes, said Han Shouxin, deputy director of the city's traffic management committee. Previously, the longest cross-sea bridge in the world was the 36-km Hangzhou Bay Cross-sea Bridge that connects the cities of Jiaxing and Ningbo in east China's Zhejiang province. IANS

As per the amendments in the income tax rules, coming into effect from July 1, quoting PAN (Permanent Account Number) will be mandatory for any payment of Rs five lakh or more for purchase of bullion or jewellery. High-value purchase of jewellery, among valuables, have often been feared to be a much favoured route for circulation of black money and quoting of PAN would help the tax authorities in tracking such transactions. Aadhaar UID Logo Bangaloreans are busy queuing up at post offices to register for their Unique Identification numbers. Despite some minor inconveniences, people are excited about the process and want other UID registrars to start registrations too. Currently, India Post is offering the service at six post offices across the city. Jayanagar Head Post Office is registering about 50 citizens every day. The process entails going to the post office and signing up for an appointment when the individual will fill out a form with basic personal information, undergo a 10-fingerprint scan and have her iris scanned. Supervisor Hitesh K R said, "People shouldn't be in a hurry as this process will go on for a year. The Aadhar packet containing their UID number will be sent to their residence." 'Geohot' George Hotz - A Famous American Hacker Facebook confirmed on Wednesday that it has hired George Hotz , a celebrated hacker known as GeoHot " who was sued by Sony for hacking the Japanese company's PlayStation 3 game console . A Facebook spokeswoman confirmed in an email to AFP that Hotz had been hired by the social network but declined to say when he had started or what he was doing for the Palo Alto, California-based company. Hotz, who is credited with being the first person to go public with a way to hack into an iPhone, reached a settlement with Sony in April in the PS3 hacking case. The company claims that the application is the world's first such smart phone application, which aims to enhance security. The free application could send instant alerts in case of danger. A forced power off of the phone or an improper exit of application would trigger an alert to be sent. China has opened the world's longest cross-sea bridge. The Jiaozhou Bay bridge is 26 miles (42 kilometers) long and links China's eastern port city of Qingdao to an offshore island, Huangdao. State-run CCTV says the 110-foot (35-meter)-wide bridge is the longest of its kind and cost more than 10 billion yuan ($1.5 billion). CCTV says the bridge passed construction appraisals on Monday and the bridge and an undersea tunnel opened to traffic on Thursday. It has taken four years to build the bridge, which is supported by more than 5,000 pillars. According to Guinness World Records, the previous record holder for a bridge over water is the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway in Louisiana. The Chinese bridge is more than 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) longer.

China's second east-west natural gas pipeline, which is the world's longest, began its operation on Thursday. The pipeline, connecting central Asia and China , will send natural gas from Turkmenistan to east China's Pearl river delta after passing through 15 of the country's provinces, reported Xinhua. The pipeline has a total length of 8,700 km. It was built with 142.2 billion yuan ($21.98 billion) in investments.

Mobile payment company PayMate has launched India's first mobile, cashless purchase management service - 'WayPay' for fleet operators in the country. The system helps fleet operators across the country to manage all on-route cash less transactions from certain retail outlets, a company statement here said. The company has tied-up with fleet management solution provider Mahaventures to offer this service initially in Western India, it said. "We analyzed the issues that fleet operators faced on their daily trips and decided to create a system that would help simplify payments for them without any external hardware devices. The PayMate platform is particularly suited for applications and Mahaventures is the ideal partner for rapid deployment (of the service) in western India", PayMate Founder-Managing Director Ajay Adiseshann said. Preparations are in full swing for the July 15 launch of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C17) carrying India's communication satellite GSAT-12. GSAT-12 with a mass of 1410 kg at lift-off, has 12 Extended C-band transponders, the Indian Space Research Organisation said in a statement. PSLV-C17 would inject GSAT-12 into an elliptical Transfer Orbit of 284 km perigee (closest point to Earth) and 21,000 km apogee (farthest point to Earth). Subsequently, the Liquid Apogee Motor of the satellite would be used to raise both apogee and perigee of the satellite to place it in a circular orbit of 36,000 km altitude. "All the four stages of the launch vehicle have been fully assembled at the Vehicle Assembly Building at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Shriharikota. Presently, the vehicle is going through various levels of electrical checkout operations and reviews", the Bangalore-headquartered ISRO said.
